WHAT IS MARATHON?

  • Marathon is a science-fiction survival FPS developed by Bungie, the studio behind Halo and Destiny.
  • Marathon launched on March 5, 2026 with a strong focus on high-stakes PvEvP extraction gameplay, where Runners deploy into dangerous zones, gather resources, complete objectives, fight hostile forces and other players, and attempt to escape with what they recover.
  • That extraction experience remains an important part of Marathon, but it is no longer the entire vision for the game.
  • Bungie is expanding Marathon into a broader collection of interconnected survival experiences with different levels of risk, competition, cooperation, and commitment.
  • Beginning with Symbiosis on December 8, Marathon will add its first permanent PvE experience and an experimental Team Deathmatch mode.
  • Bungie’s larger March 2027 evolution is planned to connect permanent PvE, PvP and PvEvP experiences into a more unified whole.

WHO ARE RUNNERS?

  • You play as a Runner, a bio-cybernetic mercenary whose consciousness can be re-uploaded into specialized Runner Shells after death.
  • Each Shell represents a different gameplay archetype and can be customized through Cores, Implants, weapons, mods and progression systems such as the Cradle.
  • Over time, Bungie’s goal is for players to build an arsenal of Runner Shells, adapting their abilities and builds to whatever challenge they intend to face.

THE STORY OF MARATHON

  • Centuries before the events of the modern game, the enormous colony ship UESC Marathon departed Mars carrying approximately 30,000 colonists toward Tau Ceti.
  • After reaching the system, communication with the colony and ship was eventually lost.
  • Now, Tau Ceti IV has become the center of a new struggle for information, resources and answers.
    • Six major factions employ Runners to complete contracts, recover data and pursue their own competing interests while the mystery surrounding the lost colony continues to unfold.
  • Storytelling is woven throughout the world through faction relationships, contracts, environmental discoveries, audio and text logs, and the Codex rather than being delivered through a traditional standalone campaign.

PvEvP Extraction remains one of its defining experiences, but Marathon is growing into a broader ecosystem where players can explore Tau Ceti IV through PvE, competitive PvP and high-stakes mixed survival activities.

WHAT IS EXTRACTION IN MARATHON?

  • Extraction gameplay is built around a simple idea:
  • Enter with something to lose. Find something worth keeping. Get out alive.
  • Unlike a traditional multiplayer match where the scoreboard determines success, an Extraction run gives players their own objectives and their own threshold for risk.
  • You might enter Tau Ceti IV to complete a faction Contract, search for a rare item, hunt another crew, explore a high-value location…or simply gather enough resources to justify leaving.
  • The important decision is knowing when to extract.

THE CORE EXTRACTION LOOP

The Core Extraction Loop

Every Extraction run is a cycle of risk, opportunity, and progression. Deploy with something to lose, pursue the goals that matter to you, survive long enough to extract, and use what you recover to prepare for the next run.

Step 01 Deploy Enter a zone with your chosen Runner Shell, equipment, loadout, crew, and objectives.
Step 02 Explore & Loot Search buildings, containers, events, Vaults, and points of interest for useful equipment, resources, and valuables.
Step 03 Fight or Avoid Engage hostile Runners and PvE combatants—or avoid unnecessary fights when survival is more valuable.
Step 04 Complete Objectives Progress Contracts, faction goals, events, keys, discoveries, and other objectives during the run.
Step 05 Extract Reach a valid extraction point and successfully leave Tau Ceti IV with the equipment and resources you recovered.
Step 06 Progress Strengthen your Stash, advance factions, build Cradle progression, and prepare stronger or more specialized loadouts.
Step 07 Return Deploy again with new goals, better preparation, and a fresh decision about how much you're willing to risk.

THE CORE EXTRACTION LOOP

  • Gear brought into an Extraction run is generally placed at risk.
  • If you successfully extract, you keep the loot and resources you recovered.
  • If you die before extraction, much of what you were carrying can be lost.\
  • That persistent risk gives seemingly simple decisions – opening another room, fighting another crew, or staying five minutes longer – much greater weight.

MARATHON'S APPROACH

  • Marathon builds on Extraction through several interconnected systems:
    • Runner Shells: Specialized bodies with distinct abilities and gameplay archetypes.
    • Buildcrafting: Cores, Implants, weapons, mods and Cradle progression allow each Runner to be customized.
    • Faction Progression: Contracts and reputation provide goals beyond simply collecting loot.
    • Dynamic Survival: Enemy crews, UESC combatants, environmental threats, map events and objectives make every deployment unpredictable.
    • World Discovery: Narrative is uncovered through repeated interaction with Tau Ceti IV rather than through a traditional linear campaign.
MARATHON IS GROWING BEYOND EXTRACTION
  • Extraction remains an important part of Marathon, but Bungie's long-term vision is broader.
  • Symbiosis — December 8, 2026 introduces Marathon's first permanent PvE experience and an experimental Team Deathmatch mode, giving players lower-pressure ways to explore, practice, build confidence and compete.
  • March 2027 is planned to connect permanent PvE, PvP and PvEvP activities into a larger survival ecosystem with different levels of intensity and commitment.
  • This means Marathon should increasingly be thought of as a survival FPS with Extraction at its core, rather than a game limited exclusively to the extraction-shooter format.

MARATHON EDITIONS

  • Marathon is available in three primary editions: Standard, Deluxe, and Collector’s, each offering different combinations of digital and physical content.
  • Which edition should you buy? Most players should start with the Standard Edition unless they specifically want the Deluxe cosmetics, rewards pass voucher, SILK tokens, or Collector’s Edition physical items.
  • Key Notes:
    • SILK is Marathon’s earnable Rewards Pass currency and is used to unlock rewards within a Rewards Pass.
    • LUX is Marathon’s purchasable premium currency and can be used for cosmetics or to unlock Premium Rewards Pass access.
    • Rewards Passes do not expire, and previous Passes remain available for purchase and progression.
  • Prices are subject to change. 

STANDARD

Best for most players. Includes the base game and access to gameplay updates as the year progresses, including maps, Runner shells, events, and similar gameplay content.
  • Provides access to the full base game experience and all future gameplay updates for a flat price of $39.99 USD.
    • Base Game: Access to the core Marathon game.
    • All Gameplay Updates: Includes all future maps, Runner shells (classes), and events as they are released.

DELUXE

Best for players who want the premium rewards pass, additional currency and extra cosmetic items. If you're a regular player, this is the way to go!
  • The Deluxe Edition, priced at $59.99 USD, is for players who want a cosmetic boost and a head start on the seasonal content.

    • Premium Rewards Pass Voucher: Unlocks the premium track.
    • 200 SILK Rewards Pass Tokens: SILK is the game’s store currency, which can be used to unlock rewards in the battle pass or purchase cosmetics.

MARATHON SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  • Marathon is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam.
  • Cross Play is enabled by default, allowing players on supported platforms to form Crews and matchmake together. Console players can opt out.
