Marathon: Runner Shells – All Shells, Cores, Implants & Rook Mode

Runner Shells are the moddable biosynthetic bodies you inhabit on runs to Tau Ceti. Let's dive in, Runner. This page explains how cores/implants work, key details about each runner shell, and squad formation recommendations.

The Important Details

  • You are a Runner, a biosynthetic body designed for high-risk operations on Tau Ceti IV.
  • You’ll get to tailor your shell through core, implant, weapon and mod systems.
    • Cores strengthen a shell’s capabilities.
    • Implants grant bonuses and perks.
  • This page dives into each shell archetype. Ready to begin? Scroll down below.

START HERE, RUNNER

RUNNER SHELLS: OVERVIEW

  • In Marathon, you don’t play as a fragile human soldier. You inhabit a Runner Shell… a biosynthetic body designed for high-risk operations on Tau Ceti IV.
  • Your consciousness transfers into these shells, allowing you to enter dangerous combat zones without permanent death. Each shell is built around a specific gameplay archetype, giving it a natural lean toward roles like intel gathering, disruption, mobility, or combat support.
  • Shells have distinct silhouettes, making it easier to identify threats in the field and quickly assess how an opponent might engage.
  • Runner Shells are modular platforms designed for customization.

HOW CUSTOMIZATION WORKS

  • Every run begins with decisions.
  • You tailor your shell’s playstyle through a combination of:
    • Cores
    • Implants
    • Weapons
    • Mods
  • These systems allow you to adjust movement, survivability, utility, and combat effectiveness.
  • Bungie describes this as building around a shell’s “natural strengths” rather than replacing them entirely.
  • This creates flexibility: the same shell can feel very different depending on your loadout.

CORES VS IMPLANTS

  • Customization in Marathon centers around two major systems:

CORE

  • Cores are generally shell-specific enhancements.
  • They modify or strengthen a shell’s inherent abilities.
  • For example, Bungie highlights the Thief shell using cores to:
    • Improve survivability
    • Reduce ability cooldowns
    • Enhance infiltration capabilities
    • Cores reinforce identity.

IMPLANTS

  • Implants are more universal…any shell can equip them!
  • Implants:
    • Grant stat bonuses
    • Include a random perk
    • Higher-tier implants add an additional fixed perk
  • Bungie uses the example of a high-tier implant called Ping+ V5, which boosts the Recon shell’s Echo Pulse ability while also granting an extra perk.
  • Implants expand possibility across shells.

DESTROYER

CLICK ABOVE TO WATCH CINEMATIC
Archetype: Combat Specialist
  • The Destroyer is built for frontline engagements.
    • It emphasizes durability and sustained combat presence.
  • This shell appears designed to anchor fights and control space.
Toolkit
  • Prime: Shoulder mounted heat-seeking missile pods
  • Tactical: A deployable Riot Barricade
  • Traits: Thrusters for movement and positioning
Tips & Tricks
  • Barricade Peeking: Use the Riot Barricade to peek around corners in third-person view to scout safely.
  • Timed Pressure: Do not activate your Search and Destroy (missiles) too early; apply sustained damage first to force a panic, then trigger them to secure the finish.
  • Aggressive Revives: Deploy your shield to protect yourself while reviving a teammate in a dangerous sightline.
PLAYER PROFILE ASSESSMENT
  • Destroyer is an aggressive frontline shell.
  • Pick if: You like a “brawler” playstyle, leading the charge, or are a beginner looking for a forgiving, durable kit. You are a Titan in Destiny.
  • Why: Its Riot Barricade provides physical cover for the team, and its homing missiles apply constant pressure on enemies, making it the primary “frontline” for any squad.

ASSASSIN

CLICK ABOVE TO WATCH CINEMATIC
Archetype: SHADOW AGENT
  • The Assassin leans into stealth and tactical engagement.
  • The focus is on repositioning, surprise, and eliminating targets before they can respond.
Toolkit
  • Prime: Smoke deployment (fields of smoke)
  • Tactical: Active Camouflage
  • Traits
    • Deploy smoke field while airborne
    • Trigger camouflage when entering smoke fields
Tips & Tricks
  • Shadow Dive Utility: Use Shadow Dive while airborne to slam into the ground and negate all fall damage.
  • The Stealth Loop: Smoke first, reposition using Active Camo, take a guaranteed shot, then vanish before the enemy can trade back.
  • Exit Timing: Invisibility flickers off when taking damage or shooting; use those final seconds of a match to vanish right as the extraction ship arrives.
  • Note: Your invisibility is near 100% when standing still. It becomes more noticeable with movement.
PLAYER PROFILE ASSESSMENT
  • Assassin is a stealth and stalker shell.
  • Pick if: You primarily play solo or enjoy a “high-risk, high-reward” ambush playstyle.
  • Why: It offers full invisibility and smoke screens to control engagement windows and safely disengage if a fight goes south.
    • In squads, it’s used for precision flanks while the enemy is distracted.

RECON

Archetype: INTEL SPECIALIST
  • Recon shells are information machines.
  • This shell helps teams anticipate movement and detect threats before direct contact.
Toolkit
  • Prime: Echo Pulse – sonar pulses to detect nearby hostiles
  • Tactical: Tracker drones that track down nearby hostiles, exploding in proximity causing enemies to overheat
  • Traits:
    • Receive warning when you are pinged; finishers ping other enemy crew members
    • Holographic footstep trails when breaking enemy shields
Tips & Tricks
  • Counter-Stealth: Use Echo Pulse to reveal invisible targets like Assassins or those using Signal Jammers.
  • Forced Overheat: Use the Tracker Drone to hunt enemies and force them to overheat, effectively locking down their movement abilities.
  • Live Pings: Performing a finisher on a downed Runner pings their entire crew’s location for your team.
PLAYER PROFILE ASSESSMENT
  • Vandal is an intel-tactical shell.
  • Pick if: You prefer strategic advantages, hunting other players, or being the “eyes and ears” of your team. Not built for head to head combat, but for – well – recon!
  • Why: Recon excels at information control, using Echo Pulse to reveal invisible targets and tracking enemies through walls after breaking their shields.
    • It is perfect for players who want to decide exactly when and where a fight happens.
    • I don’t know about you, but I usually like a little more intel with my intel.

VANDAL

Archetype: Combat Anarchist
  • The Vandal emphasizes high mobility and disruption.
  • This shell rewards aggression and creative traversal.
Toolkit
  • Prime: Amplify – Reduce heat generated and increase movement speed and weapon dexterity
  • Tactical: Turn your arm into a cannon to damage hostiles.
  • Traits
    • Secondary jump while airborne, but generate more heat
    • Supercharged slide, but generate more heat
Tips & Tricks
  • Rocket Jumping: Aim the Disruptor (arm cannon) downward to launch yourself airborne for insane flanking routes.
  • Heat Management: Always pair Vandal with Cardio Kicks, as they instantly clear heat and provide movement buffs essential for chaining Microjets and Power Slides.
  • Amplify Chain: Use Amplify to boost weapon handling and decrease the heat cost of movement, allowing you to overwhelm opponents with speed.
PLAYER PROFILE ASSESSMENT
  • Vandla is a movement & combat anarchist shell.
  • Pick if: You have high mechanical skill and enjoy fast-paced, vertical gameplay and disrupting enemy formations.
  • Why: Built for constant motion, Vandal uses Microjets for double jumps and a Disruptor cannon to blast enemies out of cover.
    • It has a high skill ceiling focused on chaining movement without overheating.

THIEF

Archetype: Covert Acquisition
  • The Thief excels at infiltration and objective manipulation.
  • The Thief is built to move quickly, scout safely, and extract efficiently.
Toolkit
  • Prime: Pilot a butterfly drone to locate enemies and steal their loot.
  • Tactical: Use a grapple, like Destiny 2’s Strand.
  • Traits:
    • Activate an X-ray visor to highlight hostiles and loot; while active, aiming at hostiles disrupts their vision.
    • Gain improved weapon readiness (handling) and grapple recharge rate based on how many items are in your backpack.
Tips & Tricks
  • Backpack Buffs: Don’t equip your backpack immediately; fill it with items first to maximize the cooldown reduction granted by higher-tier cores.
  • Explosive Drones: You can place Claymores on top of your Pickpocket Drone and fly it into enemy positions for free “drone bomb” damage.
  • Escape Artist: Save the Grapple use for rapid vertical movement to escape danger; avoid overstaying in one spot while piloting the drone.
    • When piloting, make sure you’re in a secure hidden location.
    • There is a Superior (purple) rarity core called Hideout that can help make you invisible when piloting a drone…it is commonly paired with the “Premium Package” core (to improve drone durability) or “Partner in Crime” (to allow the drone to ping enemies when not in use).
PLAYER PROFILE ASSESSMENT
  • Thief is a loot specialist shell.
  • Pick if: You prioritize gathering high-value loot and extracting safely over constant combat.
  • Why: With an X-Ray Visor that highlights loot through walls and a Pickpocket Drone for remote scavenging, Thief is built to maximize the profit of every run.

TRIAGE

Archetype: Field Medic
  • Triage supports allies through recovery and enhancement.
  • This shell appears designed for team sustain and mid-fight stabilization.
Toolkit
  • Prime: Revive crew members or EMP hostiles.
  • Tactical: Activate med drones that regenerate ally health and shields
  • Traits:
    • Medical consumables are shared with your crew when med drones are attached to them
    • Boost performance of your weapons for a short time
Tips & Tricks
  • Consumable Sharing: Any ally with a Med Drone attached receives a copy of any consumable you use (like Cardio Kicks or Energy Amps) through the Shareware trait.
  • Ranged Revives: Use Capacitive Gauntlets to revive downed teammates from a distance instead of exposing yourself.
  • Multi-Target Revive: Your ultimate can target up to two players at once if they are close together, allowing for a double revive.
PLAYER PROFILE ASSESSMENT
  • Triage is a support shell.
  • Pick if: You enjoy being the “backbone” of a squad and prioritizing team survival over raw kills.
  • Why: Triage is the only shell capable of delivering ranged revives and mirroring its own healing to allies via the Shareware trait.
    • It is considered nearly essential for coordinated squad play to “erase” teammate mistakes.

SCAVENGER: ROOK

CLICK ABOVE TO WATCH CINEMATIC
Archetype: SCAVENGER FRAME
  • Rook is a unique shell designed specifically for Scavenger Mode.
  • Unlike other shells, Rook:
    • Enters a match already in progress
    • Drops in solo
    • Starts with no loadout
    • Risks nothing upon entry
NOTES
  • This shell offers a lower-risk, opportunistic playstyle.
    • It allows players to enter an active environment, gather resources, and exit without committing a pre-built kit.
  • Rook represents a different rhythm of play… reactive, adaptive, and opportunistic.
Tips & Tricks
  • Gear Stabilization: Rook’s main gear is typically destroyed upon extraction, but you can find Matter Fixatives (dropped by commanders) to stabilize “unstable” items and keep them permanently.
  • Bot Blending: With capstone upgrades, Rook can blend in with UESC AI bots to surprise and wipe enemy teams.
PLAYER PROFILE ASSESSMENT
  • Rook is a low-risk scavenger shell.
  • Pick if: You are a beginner learning the map or a player looking for “zero-to-hero” runs without risking your personal gear.
  • Why: Rook is a solo-only shell that allows you to join in-progress matches and blend in with AI bots, making it the safest way to rebuild your inventory after a loss.

ASSESS :// SQUAD FORMATION

  • Here are some recommended squad formation tips, and general survival tips.
Composition Name Shell Lineup Primary Strategy Best For...
The All-Rounder Destroyer + Recon + Triage Balanced defense, constant intel, and high sustain. The "Gold Standard." Coordinated groups and general map exploration.
The Aggressive Destroyer + Recon + Assassin Intel-driven flanks and heavy combat pressure to wipe other squads. PvP-focused players looking to hunt for high-tier loot.
The Eco-Focus Thief + Vandal + Triage Chaos for distraction, efficient looting, and safe, fast extraction. Fast "in-and-out" runs to build up your Stash.
The Invisible Hand Assassin + Recon + Thief Stealth-based ambushes; finding targets and engaging only on your terms. Players who prefer "rat" gameplay or outsmarting opponents.
The Wall of Steel Destroyer + Destroyer + Triage Rotating Riot Barricades to hold a single room or extraction point indefinitely. Defending high-value Vaults or late-game extractions.
The Blitzkrieg Vandal + Vandal + Recon Extreme verticality and speed; attacking from the ceiling to disorient teams. High-skill players who enjoy fast-paced, chaotic movement.
The Safety Net Destroyer + Vandal + Triage A "forgiving" setup where the Destroyer tanks and Triage fixes mistakes. Learning new maps or teaching friends the basics of the game.
The Loot Vacuum Thief + Thief + Triage Using multiple X-Ray Visors to ignore "trash" rooms and hit only high-value crates. Rebuilding your inventory quickly after a massive losing streak.
SURVIVAL TIPS FOR SQUADS
  • The Triage “Mirror”: If you have a Triage, let them be the one to use expensive consumables (like Energy Amps) so the whole team gets the buff for free.
  • Recon Pings: Even if you aren’t in a fight, have your Recon pulse near Extraction Zones to check for “exit campers” hiding in bushes or corners.
  • Destroyer Cover: Use the Riot Barricade to block narrow doorways while your Thief loots a chest, giving them a safe 10-second window.
