Exotic Catalysts Guide
Learn how to acquire all of the exotic catalysts available in Destiny 2.

What are Exotic Catalysts?

  • Exotic Catalysts are special upgrades for Exotic weapons.
    • Once acquired and completed, a catalyst can improve the weapon with bonus stats, new perks, stronger effects, improved utility, or buildcrafting interactions that are not available on the base version of the weapon.
  • Some catalysts are simple stat upgrades whereas others meaningfully change how the weapon plays by adding stronger damage perks, improving ammo economy, enhancing subclass synergy, or making the weapon more reliable in PvE, PvP, or boss damage situations.
  • In most cases, earning the catalyst is only the first step. After it drops, the catalyst must be upgraded by completing its objective, such as defeating enemies, completing activity requirements, or finishing a weapon-specific task.
    • Once upgraded, the catalyst becomes active permanently for that Exotic weapon.

Exotic Catalysts Guide

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get Exotic Catalysts?
  • Catalyst sources vary by weapon.
  • Some drop from core activity completions, some come from specific raids or dungeons, some are tied to Exotic missions or Pinnacle Ops, and others may be acquired through vendors, seasonal archive systems, or special reward paths.
  • Check each catalyst individually, because older sources may have changed with the Monument of Triumph update.
Do I need to upgrade a catalyst after it drops?
  • Yes. Most Exotic Catalysts are not fully active the moment they drop.
  • After acquiring the catalyst, inspect the Exotic weapon to view the upgrade objective.
  • Once the objective is completed, the catalyst’s bonus becomes active on that weapon.
Are Exotic Catalysts worth completing?
  • Usually, yes. Some catalysts are small quality-of-life upgrades, but many significantly improve a weapon’s damage, consistency, ammo economy, subclass synergy, or endgame value.
  • If you use an Exotic regularly, completing its catalyst is one of the best ways to unlock its full potential.

Legacy Exotics
  • We are still working on new source paths for legacy exotics.
  • If the guide below references Nightfall, old Rewards Passes, they have most likely been absorbed into Ops activities.
  • If you notice a mistake or have found a new path for the catalyst, sound off in the comments below! 🙂
